Emerson A6312/06 is a dual-channel speed and shaft vibration sensor/monitor designed to monitor the speed, phase, zero speed, and direction of rotation of rotating machinery. It can be used with eddy current sensors or Hall effect sensors to measure and process shaft speed and rotation reference marks (key pulses). The Speed and Key Monitor is designed for high reliability in monitoring the most critical rotating machinery in plants, measuring speed, phase, zero speed, and direction of rotation. This 1-slot monitor is used in conjunction with AMS 6500 monitors to form a complete API 670 machinery protection system. Applications include steam, gas, compressors, and hydro turbines.
The Speed and Key Monitor can be configured for redundant mode, allowing for automatic switchover from the primary to the backup tachometer. Sensor gap voltage and pulse counting/comparison are monitored to trigger the switchover. When operating in redundant mode, the main and failover key or speed displacement sensors must be installed in the same axial plane to ensure phase continuity during failover. Speed measurements involve a displacement sensor mounted internally on the machine, with the target being a toothed wheel, keyway, or gear rotating on the shaft.
The purpose of speed measurement is to alarm on zero speed, monitor for reverse rotation, and provide speed data for advanced analysis to track process conditions. Key, or phase measurements, also use a displacement transducer but require a once-per-revolution target, such as a keyway, rather than a toothed wheel or gear. Phase measurement is a critical parameter for detecting changes in machine health.
