Product Introduction

9907-147 ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System is an industrial-grade electronic overspeed protection system designed and manufactured by Woodward. It is used for real-time overspeed detection and protection of critical rotating machinery (such as steam turbines, gas turbines, and other high-speed equipment). This system adopts a digital monitoring and voting logic structure, which can quickly identify overspeed conditions during the operation of the main unit and promptly issue a trip command when the preset conditions are triggered, thereby protecting the equipment from damage.

Key Features

Support for three-channel independent speed sampling
ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System monitors the engine speed through three independent speed sampling units and uses a "two-out-of-three" hardware voting logic to determine the overspeed condition. This architecture significantly enhances the ability to resist noise-induced false triggering, making the protection decisions more reliable.
Promptly respond to speeding incidents.
The system ensures that the total response time from the MPU input to the relay tripping is controlled within the range of tens of milliseconds (e.g, < 40 ms), which helps prevent high-speed machinery from suffering structural damage during the instant of overspeed.
Configurable trip setting point
Users can set the trip point within a reasonable rotational speed range based on the actual mechanical conditions on site. For example, it can be flexibly configured within the range of 250 rpm to 25 kHz to adapt to the rotational speed characteristics of different equipment.
An easy-to-use human-machine interface at the site
Some models of the ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System offer three LCDs and panel buttons, which can be used for local viewing of speed, setting status, and system alarm information, facilitating on-site maintenance and debugging.
High integration and modular design
The system supports functions such as easy replacement modules (hot replacement), built-in self-checking, etc., which enhance the efficiency of on-site maintenance and enable seamless integration with the control system.

Main Advantages

✔ Genuine independent security protection mechanism
Unlike the overspeed protection strategy that solely relies on the main control logic, the ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System offers an independent safety protection logic. Even if the main control system fails, this protection device can still reliably trigger the trip.

✔ High reliability with anti-interference capabilities
By adopting hardware voting logic and a three-channel independent design, it is possible to effectively eliminate misjudgments caused by single-channel failures, reduce the risk of misoperation, and enhance the overall system security.

✔ Compatible with various speed sensors
Supports multiple speed signal inputs s, such as a magnetic pickup unit (MPU), capable of meeting various types of mechanical monitoring requirements, and is conducive to deployment in complex equipment systems.

✔ Rapid Fault Response and Equipment Protection
The extremely short response time and clear trip output enable the ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System to quickly protect high-speed rotating equipment, preventing mechanical damage and chain reactions.

✔ Expandable communication and diagnostic functions
Through standard communication interfaces such as Modbus RTU (depending on the specific model), the system can achieve remote monitoring and fault diagnosis, which is conducive to integration into larger-scale control/safety systems.

Installation Suggestions

1. Installation location
Install the ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System in a location that is far from high temperatures, high humidity, and strong vibrations to extend the equipment's lifespan and ensure measurement accuracy.
Avoid getting close to high-power motors, electromagnetic interference sources,s and high-voltage lines to reduce signal noise.
2.Mechanical fixation
Use the standard rack or panel installation method to ensure that the equipment is firmly installed without any shaking.
For modular or hot-swappable models, ensure that the slots are aligned and fasten the fixing screws according to the instructions.
3. Connection and Grounding
Connect the three-speed sensors (MPU or equivalent signals) according to the manual. Make sure the signal lines are short and well shielded.
The power supply, relay output,s and communication interfaces of the ProTech 203 Overspeed Protection System should be grounded as per the regulations to prevent interference and malfunctions.
4.Environmental Requirements
Recommended operating temperature range: -25°C to +60°C.
Avoid direct sunlight, water accumulation, and excessive dust. An additional protective cover can be used if necessary.
Ensure good ventilation to prevent the equipment from overheating and affecting accuracy.
5.Pre-start inspection
Check the integrity of the wiring and the status of the relays.
Confirm that the speed sensor is installed securely and that the gap and angle meet the requirements.
After powering on, check whether the LCD or indicator lights are functioning properly and ensure that the system self-check has been completed.
